Wastwater & Wasdale

Situated only a few miles from Ravenglass, Wastwater is England’s deepest lake and lies at the foot of England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. It was recently voted ‘Britain’s Favourite View’.

The road winds along the lakeside to the head of the Wasdale Valley offering beautiful views of the famous screes that drop dramatically into the lake, sometimes reflected perfectly in the still waters. Take the opportunity to visit St. Olaf’s Church, one of the smallest in the country.

Wasdale Head is also known as the “Birth Place of British Climbing”, records from the 1880’s show that Wasdale had been discovered by Oxford Undergraduates who pitted themselves against the rocks and crags of the surrounding Fells. Visit the Wasdale Head Inn and marvel at the primitive equipment used by these pioneers (not always successfully, as the grave stones in the Church Yard will testify!), then don your Goretex and explore the majestic and stunning countryside.
